The Chechens (Chechen: Hохчи, Russian: перевода) are an ethnic group native to the North Caucasus region in Russia, mostly in Chechnya, one of Russia's ethnic sovereign republics. The Chechens make up most of the minority Muslim population in Russia. Chechens have their own language known as the Chechen language unrelated to Russian or any Slavic language. Chechens are only Russian by nationality and not ethnicity.

Etymology, Origin and History[]

The term for the ethnicity has Iranian roots from the world "Noxçi". Traditionally most Russians believe that it orginated from the name of the town Chechen-Aul, this is where the Chechens defeated Russian soldiers. According to Russian sources the term originates from the Kabardian word shashan.
